Healing Earth's Fever with Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR)

Global warming is often described through rising temperatures, greenhouse gases, and extreme weather events.
Ayurveda offers another perspective.
The Ayurvedic principle of Loka-Purusha Samya states that the human body (Purusha) is a microcosm of the universe (Loka). The same natural laws that govern the human body also govern nature.
When a person develops a fever, Ayurveda does not focus only on reducing body temperature. It first identifies the root cause through the framework of Nidana Panchaka, a systematic process of understanding the origin, progression, and nature of the disease.

My research on "Healing Earth with Ayurveda" applies this same principle to climate change.

If fever represents an unhealthy rise in body temperature, then global warming represents Earth's fever. Rising land temperatures, heatwaves, depleted groundwater, and drying ecosystems are symptoms of an underlying imbalance, not the disease itself.



As per Ayurveda, solutions for global warming or extreme heat could be by building localised artificial groundwater systems


Aquifer Storage & Recovery (ASR) Wells

  • High-capacity injection wells drill directly into deep, depleted aquifers.

  • During wet seasons or flood conditions, excess surface water, stormwater, or highly treated recycled wastewater is pressurized and pumped hundreds of meters down into the underground rock layers.

  • During dry seasons, the same wells are reversed to pump clean water back to the surface.

nfiltration Basins & Spreading Grounds

  • Engineers excavate large, unlined surface basins directly above permeable sand or gravel layers.

  • Diversion canals route river water or treated effluent into these basins. The water slowly seeps down through the soil matrix, which acts as a natural sand filter, recharging the shallow water table.

Check Dams & Percolation Tanks

  • Widely used in rural and arid regions (such as India and Southern Europe), small concrete or earthen dams are built across seasonal stream beds.

  • By slowing down runoff, water is forced to sit over permeable ground long enough to infiltrate the soil rather than washing away to the sea.
